Field Trip to the Wilderness

by Allison Zhang, Antonia Tse, and Mia Tamura

On October 10, 2024, two third grade classes went on a field trip to Westmoreland Sanctuary, which is a nature preserve where you could hike and observe wildlife. The other class went on October 8. It was a 30-minute bus ride to get there.

When they arrived, they met their guides and split up into 2 groups. One was Mr. Cadalzo, and the other was Ms. Brown's class. Mr. Reilly's class went on a different day. The first group stayed inside and learned about some animals. There was a toad, a bunny, a snake, and some other animals. The students learned about the animals' habitats and whether they were native species to America or not. The children could also touch the animals if they would like to.

The second group hiked down a steep hill to the pond. Then they each got a net and used it to catch water creatures. Afterward, the tadpoles, frogs, and fish they caught were put in large bins for students to observe. Everyone learned something about biology. Later, when both groups were done, they switched activities.

Unfortunately, two people fell into the pond, but luckily, they were not injured because the water was not very deep.

The Third Graders enjoyed the trip to Westmoreland Sanctuary because it was a real-life experience of the wild and nature. It was a fantastic field trip, and we thank the parent volunteers for coming along on the trip to the nature center.
